Bernhard Prigan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhard Prigan (* around 1920) is a German serial killer who killed at least three women in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

He always looked for his victims in the immediate vicinity of motorways and main roads. How many of the so-called highway murders he actually committed at the time is unclear. He was also referred to as a "strangler" in the press.

On November 7, 1952, Prigan was arrested in a village near Mannheim. He confessed to three murders, including the murder of 19-year-old tailor Wilma Sulzer from Altlussheim five days earlier. A crust of bread found at the crime scene near the main road to Mannheim contributed to his removal. On the basis of this, the bread factory and via it the traders could first be determined. A trader gave the first clue about a man with a headband. This was later remembered by a patrol officer whom Prigan had asked for directions. On the day of his arrest, he slew 51-year-old housewife Margarethe Pohl with a club in a forest. He was observed by a student. After he had fled out of fear, Prigan spoke to him, asked him for a pump and advised him not to go into the forest anymore because there were "drunk guys" there.

On 19 December 1953 Prigan after four days of negotiations to three times was a lifelong prison convicted. Unlike today, no total sentence was made up of several life sentences.
