The Bernhard van Hagen'sche Studienstiftung was founded in 1617 by the farmer Bernhard van Hagen . It is one of the oldest foundations on the Lower Rhine and is now based in Kalkar . The chairwoman of the foundation's board of trustees is Britta Schulz, mayor of Kalkar.

The aim is to provide financial support for students of Roman Catholic theology in the Münster diocese with the aim of becoming a priest. The grant is paid for up to seven years and is made up of the economic income from the foundation's assets, which primarily consist of real estate.

The foundation currently has around 100 members. The family meeting decides on the admission of new family members. The rendant of the foundation must be a blood relative of the founder.

Wilhelm Jacob van Bebber (1841–1909), who received 100 thalers in funding at the age of 18 and later made a name for himself worldwide in weather research, was also a blood relative and sponsored by the foundation in his early years .
