Professional Association of German Building Biologists

The professional association of German building biologists VDB e. V. is an association of independent specialists and sworn experts from the fields of biology, chemistry, electrical engineering and construction .

The VDB understands building biology to be a critical examination of the influences of the built environment on human health. The VDB represents a professional representation of its members and works on a German and international level. An interdisciplinary cooperation in association with professional associations, environmental medicine specialists, lawyers and building experts should enable a holistic approach on a broad basis.

The goals of the VDB are:

  • Promotion of quality management for every active full member according to international standards;
  • constant further development of the VDB guidelines;
  • to be trend-setting in the field of building diagnostics through further development of knowledge and analytical methods in the field of building biology;
  • Carrying out specialist conferences, seminars and further training measures with the aim of continuously promoting the professional competence of the members and communicating the knowledge of building biology to other specialist groups and associations;
  • Promoting interdisciplinary cooperation;
  • Protection and creation of the uniqueness of the job title "Building Biologist VDB";
  • Representation of interests externally;
  • protect the interests of consumers by providing information and advice on avoidable environmental and health risks in buildings;
  • to advise its members on all professional matters in economic, legal, professional and technical terms, taking into account the Legal Advice Act;
  • if necessary, to develop competition rules and to have them registered with the competent antitrust authority;
  • to fight unfair competition in commercial advertising and any other form with all available means and to counter all violations of commercial customs and decency;
  • to keep the competent authorities informed of the problems, concerns and wishes of its members;
  • to advise and support the legislative bodies in the federal, state and local governments in drafting and preparing relevant legislative proposals, ordinances and statutes;
  • to maintain relationships with other associations and other organizations as well as to exchange information and ideas, in particular to enable mutual accession and, if necessary, to provide mutual support;
  • to keep in contact with the press through public relations work, to inform the media (e.g. internet, specialist and popular newspapers and magazines as well as radio and television) about problems, concerns and wishes of the association and its members, and for a favorable price To ensure the image and reputation of the association and its members in public.

VDB building biologists undertake to carry out measurements and analyzes using scientifically recognized and reproducible methods. You can get certified by the VDB as "Building Biologist VDB" if you meet the quality criteria specified for this.

Building biology studies of a physical, chemical and microbiological nature have the purpose of uncovering pollution in interior spaces and their causes in order to be able to initiate targeted and efficient renovation measures. Quality assurance is required so that environmental risks in buildings can be reliably identified and eliminated .

The VDB is actively involved in further training for members and the professional world.
