The professional association information library e. V. (BIB), as a professional association in Germany, represents the interests of library employees and is - u. a. by offering advanced training courses - for the promotion of librarianship and information. The association was created in 2000 through the merger of the two predecessor organizations, Verein der Bibliothekare und Assistenten e. V. (vba) and the Association of Graduate Librarians at Scientific Libraries e. V. (VdDB) and has around 6,000 members in 2016.

Every spring, the BIB organizes together with the Verein Deutscher Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare e. V. holds a nationwide specialist conference, including the Librarian's Day and the Library Congress . The BIB is a member of Bibliothek & Information Deutschland (BID, formerly the Federal Association of German Library Associations BDB), IFLA and EBLIDA , the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft , the Federal Academy for Cultural Education and the working group for youth literature .

structure

The internal structure of the BIB is characterized by a board of directors with a chairman and up to four other board members, a managing director , an office in Reutlingen and regional associations which , with a few exceptions, correspond to the federal states. There are also six technical commissions:

  • Training and job profiles
  • Classification advice
  • Advanced training
  • One-person librarians
  • Association marketing and association communication
  • Web commission

Since 2015 it has been possible to set up temporary working groups (special interest groups) at BIB. The first of these working groups is the "New Professionals" group.
