BuB - Library and Information Forum, founded in 1948 under the title “Library and Education” by the then “Association of German People's Librarians” as a follow-up publication (from 1971: “Book and Library”, since 2000: “BuB”), is the most widespread today , cross-divisional German-language library specialist journal .

History and program of the magazine from its founding in 1922 to the present

The journal was founded by the Association of People's Librarians in 1922 under the name Book Care and Review . This makes it clear that a focus was on book criticism, which should give librarians help in making decisions about the procurement of books. In 1933 the magazine was brought into line and tried to influence the librarians with Nazi propaganda. In 1945 the magazine was banned.

With the approval of the American occupation authorities, the first issue of the new establishment of the magazine was published in Bremen in November 1948 under the title “Bücherei und Bildung” of the “Association of People's Librarians”, which was officially founded in Fulda in June 1949 , and was published by the director of the People's Libraries of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , Werner Mevissen (1911-1978). This follow-up publication also mainly contained book reviews until 1976, which from then on appeared in an information service of the Ekz.bibliotheksservice . The first editor-in-chief was Hans Harald Breddin, who also set up and oversaw the book reviews department.

A new concept in the 1970/71 program led to a further change in title to "Book and Library". In 2001 the name changed to »BuB: Forum for Library and Information«, which is still valid today. The journal has been supported by the Information Library Association (BIB) since 2000 .

Today BuB contains essays, comments, contributions to discussions, interviews, reports and news as well as reviews from the range of topics of public and academic libraries, the media and information market, education and cultural policy as well as the heading “From the professional association” (responsible for the association part : Katrin Lück and Karin Holste-Flinspach). The authors of the paper include - in addition to librarians and information experts from home and abroad - also politicians, university lecturers, writers and journalists.

The two editors directly elected by members of the Information Library (BIB) professional association , an editor delegated by the BIB board, and the editors Bernd Schleh (responsible) and Steffen Heizereder are responsible for the content .

Since the 50th year 1998 BuB has an editorial advisory board, which includes personalities from different areas (not only) of the library and information system. BuB subscribers to around 6,500 members of the BIB, for whom the subscription is included in the association fee, also libraries in Germany and abroad, training centers and cultural politicians.

At the end of 2012 the BuB homepage was expanded, since then current short messages about libraries can be found there. A booklet archive was set up on the homepage from 2006 onwards, and all booklets are fully available for download as PDF files 3 months after the booklet was published on the website .

BuB is indexed in the BIB-OPUS repository, from year 33.1981 the metadata of the articles are included, the years 2015–2016 are also recorded in full text. The provision of full texts is to be expanded further.

An IVW- checked edition of 7,677 copies appears annually , ten issues with a total of 700 editorial pages.
