Werner Mevissen

Werner Mevissen (born April 16, 1911 in Aachen , † January 4, 1978 in Bremen ) was a German library director.

Life

Mevissen was the son of the timber merchant Leo Mevissen and grew up in Cologne. At the request of his father, he first completed an apprenticeship as a timber merchant, but left his parents' company at the age of 20 and followed his inclination to the book industry. First he made up his Abitur (1934), did a traineeship in Berlin and then attended the bookselling school in Leipzig to become a publishing clerk. In 1943 he married the future mayor of Bremen Annemarie Schmidt (SPD), who worked as a bookseller in Leipzig. The marriage has two children.

Work as library director in Bremen

In 1945 after the end of the war he took over the management of the public libraries of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen . In 1947, the separation was carried out of the public library of the State Library Bremen and the continuation as an independent municipal public library since 1969 at the instigation of the Bremen Public Library operates. Mevissen implemented his ideas for the public library in Bremen for all social groups and developed the public libraries through a concept of decentralization. His motto: "A book for everyone in Bremen". National and international work as a librarian
