Jürgen Eyssen

Jürgen Eyssen (born April 21, 1922 in Berlin , † January 31, 1988 in Hanover ) was a German librarian.

Career

After completing his exams and doctorate, Eyssen initially worked at the Dortmund City and State Library , Stuttgart City Library and Essen City Library . From 1957 to 1963 he was director of the Gelsenkirchen City Library and from 1963 until he retired in 1980 he was director of the Hanover City Library .

He was editor of the journal Buch und Bibliothek and from 1977 to 1980 President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (formerly: INTAMEL) and a constant campaigner for the interests of public libraries, such as B.
“It would probably not have occurred to anyone to cut money on street lighting or garbage disposal, which are undoubtedly vital functions for the modern city. And the regular, steady flow of printed information wouldn't be vital? ... Radical curtailments of means of purchasing books, as they are currently reported across the country from the Federal Republic, are politically foolish, yes, even more, irresponsible ... The deletion of means of purchasing books is the result of a censorship by the red pen. "
