Karl Schicker

Karl Schicker (born March 25, 1931 in Nuremberg ; † April 1, 2013 ) was a German flautist , conductor and composer .

Life

Karl Schicker received his first violin lessons from his father, the violinist Anton Schicker, as well as piano lessons from church music director Leonhard Stirnweiss. From 1949 Karl Schicker studied at the Nuremberg Conservatory: flute with Hans Schneider, piano with Helen Herrmann and Willi Kühne, conducting with Alfons Dressel, Max Loy and Erich Kloss, and composition with Max Gebhardt. From 1953 he deepened his flute studies with Karl Bobzien (Munich), Kurt Redel ( International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg ) and André Jaunet (Zurich). He also attended the conducting class of Dimitri Mitropoulos at the Mozarteum Salzburg.

From 1954 Karl Schicker was principal flutist with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra , between 1959 and 1976 principal flutist in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Nuremberg ( Nuremberg Philharmonic ). Schicker had been a lecturer at the Meistersinger Conservatory in Nuremberg since 1958, and in 1977 he received a professorship for flute and chamber music, which he held until his retirement. In 1977 he was also appointed as a lecturer for woodwinds at the International Summer Academy “Collegium Musicum” at Schloss Pommersfelden . In 1987 he took over the artistic direction and artistic director of the summer academy. Between 1991 and 1999 Karl Schicker was visiting professor at the Japan Clinic Academy Osaka, Japan.

In 1963 Karl Schicker founded the Nuremberg Wind Quintet, in 1968 he was one of the founding members of the ars nova ensemble Nuremberg, which continues to give concerts with works by contemporary composers under the artistic direction of Werner Heider . Schicker was also a member of the ARPA TRIO, founded in 1970 (together with Therese Reichling, harp, and Jürgen Kussmaul , viola) and from 1972 of the Barock-Consort Nürnberg (with Werner Jacob , harpsichord, Dieter Hebecker, violin, and Claus Reichardt, violoncello). With these ensembles and as a soloist, Karl Schicker gave numerous concerts at home and abroad, including in Paris, Munich, Tokyo, Zagreb, Krakow, Prague, Budapest and Barcelona (with the world premiere of the flute concerto "Phases" by Francis Miroglio ). Numerous composers dedicated works for flute to Karl Schicker, which he premiered. He played in numerous radio productions, including for Bayerischer Rundfunk, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and Südwestdeutscher Rundfunk. As a composer, Karl Schicker mainly writes works for flute.
