Beryl de Zoete

Beryl de Zoete (actually: Beryl Drusilla de Zoete , married Beryl de Sélincourt , * 1879 in London , † 1962 ) was an English ballet dancer, orientalist, and dance critic and researcher. She is also known as a translator from Italo Svevos into English. She also participated in the creation of an oratorio.

Biographical

She was born in London and lived there until her death. She married Basil de Sélincourt (* 1876) in 1902, but was soon divorced. She was then in a lifelong relationship with Arthur Waley (1889–1966), but no longer married.
She studied dance a. a. In 1913 and 1915 with Émile Jaques-Dalcroze and then taught until the 1920s . She made long trips, including to Bali and South Asia .

Professional

In the field of dance she taught eurythmy and researched (East) Indian dance and theater traditions. Together with Walter Spies she wrote the book "Dance and Drama in Bali (1938)", which is still a reference for Balinese dance and theater forms. It was only reissued in 2002 and is now out of print. She wrote about dance topics for various magazines. Her dance books appeared on Bali in 1938, on India in 1953 and on Sri Lanka in 1957.
