Beschornerkreuz
The Beschornerkreuz is a historic plague column on Favoritenstrasse between houses no. 173 and 175 in the 10th Viennese district of Favoriten . It dates from the Baroque period and was badly damaged in World War II and then restored.
history
Also known as the "Favoritner Plague Column", the Trinity Column was donated by Laurenz and Walburga Beschorner after a plague epidemic in 1679 as a thank you for the end of the plague. The square pillar made of sandstone stands on a pedestal, at the top there is a sculpture of the crowned Trinity in the form of a mercy seat . Dedication inscriptions are located on the front and back of the pillar. The column was restored several times in 1772 and 1797 by Leonhard Unsin and Georg Wiesendaller.
During the Second World War the shaft was damaged and the group of figures destroyed. The column was restored in 1979 by the sculptor Heribert Rath (1924–2007) based on old photographs . The original was brought to the Favoriten District Museum and replaced by a copy at the same location.
