Occupation of Malybajli and Gushchular

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The occupation of Malybajli and Guschtschular refers to the annexation and destruction of the Azerbaijani settled villages of Malybajli and Guschtschular by Armenian units in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan in February 1992.

overview

With the transition from the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict to the warlike phase at the beginning of 1992, the security situation in the predominantly Azerbaijani-populated provinces and villages in Nagorno-Karabakh became increasingly precarious. Shusha (Shusha) was formed at that time the largest Azerbaijani enclave within the administrative borders of the breakaway territory. The districts of Gushchular and Malybeyli, which are administratively part of the Shusha, are located in the Nagorno-Karabakh highlands and had around 4,000 inhabitants before the Armenian attacks. Similar to the city of Xocalı (Chodschali), Azerbaijani refugees who were expelled from Armenia arrived in Gushchular and Malybeyli since 1988 . Their number ranged from 500 to 1500 people.

Attack and massacre

Since October 1991, both villages were completely cut off from the outside world due to the Armenian blockade. The only way to escape was by air. The last helicopter that wanted to fly the trapped residents to Shusha was shot down by Armenians on January 28, 1992 . On the night of February 10, the Armenian volunteer militias (the so-called "Arabo fighters"), mostly from Syria and Lebanon , stormed both villages, which were shelled by armored vehicles and heavy artillery . The closest safe place for the remaining residents (including many children and women) was the village of Abdal Gulably in the city of Agdam , which, however, required crossing Armenian villages.

Number of victims

Eight Azerbaijani civilians were killed as a result of the Armenian attack in Gushchular and Malybayli, according to Human Rights Watch . The Azerbaijani side estimates that 30 civilians have been murdered.

According to the Russian human rights organization Memorial , Armenian units burned both villages to the ground.
