Bessemer City
Bessemer City is a city in Gaston County , North Carolina , USA . The population was 5,119 at the 2000 census. Founded in 1893 , the city's motto is City with a Heart .
history
The city was named after Henry Bessemer . Bessemer City was founded near the location of the Ormand-Sloan-Washington ironworks. James Ormand was given land by King George II in 1756 . He founded a mine and the Ormand hut , the oldest in America. The city was an important center of the cotton and iron industry. During the American Revolution, the Ormand Hut manufactured cannon balls and cannons for the American side.
