A bed stone is a hot stone, heat stone or brique chauffeuse. Together with the "hot brick" or "hot stone", also called "heat stone", it was a forerunner of the hot water bottle. The stones were wrapped in a cloth to preheat the bed and placed in the bed. When heated on the stove or in the oven, they store the heat that is used to warm the bed or to keep food warm.
In around the 16th century, bed stones were made from serpentine stone . The serpentine stone was found in today's Saxony and had the advantage that it could store the heat supplied to it for a very long time, for example by placing it in the oven or on the stove. It was also very easy to process with simple tools, which made a smooth, pleasant surface possible. Meanwhile there are more and more lovers; therefore, bed stones have been manufactured again in Zöblitz / Saxony for some time .
Even then, there was a clear difference between rich and poor. This is one of the reasons why the bed stone was used by wealthy citizens and the poorer strata had to be content with a heated brick (brick), river stone or a water bottle made of clay.
A bed stone is made of firebricked clay that is fired at 1300 ° C and then covered with glaze , which then hardens at 1020 ° C.
