The Znojmo District Court

The Znojmo District Court ( Okresní soud ve Znojmě ) is a building on náměstí Republiky ( Republic Square ) in Znojmo (Znojmo) in the Czech Republic .

history

Due to an administrative reform following the revolution of 1848 , Znojmo became the seat of a district court. On April 25, 1855, this took over the entire civil and criminal law files up to July 1, 1850 from the city's magistrate, which had previously performed the function of civil, criminal and regional court. According to a contract signed between the city and the Ministry of Justice on September 1, 1849 and February 11, 1855, this new court was initially housed in the old town hall and the so-called tavern house. After an addition was made, an agreement was reached according to which the building complex was left to the Ministry of Justice for a further 20 years.

The public prosecutor's office was housed on Oberer Platz on the first floor of house 233 (later 8).

The city of Znojmo left the former Saliterei , some houses and undeveloped land across from the city theater on the west side of what was then Salisplatz as the construction site for the new courthouse to be built with an attached prison for 150 convicts . The site was handed over to the commission on March 10, 1913, but the first work had already started in 1912.

The plans for the neoclassical courthouse with four wings and a clock tower come from the architects Johann Unger, Klement Prinosil and Franz Svoboda. The concrete work was carried out by Donath & Co from Brno and the carpentry work by Josef Jahn from Znojmo. In connection with the establishment of the court, the Viennese architect Rudolf Eisler , who at that time belonged to the structural engineering studio of the Ministry of the Interior, is also named without further details.

The district court and the prison were handed over on May 29, 1918. From June 1919, the first court hearings took place in the new building, although the main staircase was not yet completed and the furniture was extremely poor.

The prison, which belonged to the state according to an agreement of June 23, 1828, was handed over to the city of Znojmo in May 1919 as a partial replacement for the land given to the state for the new building. On June 30 of the same year, the old town hall, which had previously been used as a courthouse, was returned to the city.

In the first years of use, the court, the public prosecutor's office and the tax office, the state building office, the trade inspectorate, the border tax office and the fee control office were located in the building.
