The Bhimashankar Game Reserve is a protected area in the Indian state of Maharashtra . It is located in the Pune district , has an area of ​​131 km² and is part of the Western Ghats (Sahyadri Ranges). The reserve was established in 1984. There are nine original tribal villages here. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources has classified the area in Category IV.

Biodiversity has been preserved by preserving a group of sacred groves for generations. These groves act as a gene pool in this area, from which plant seeds are distributed. In 1984 an evergreen climber of the species Xantolis tomentosa was found in Ahupe, a tribal village with a sacred grove, which is estimated to be 800 to 1000 years old.
