Bhola , also Dakhin Shahbazpur , is the largest island in Bangladesh with a land area of 1,441 km². The island in the Meghna Delta is part of the Bhola district and has around 1.7 million inhabitants. The island can be reached by ferry. Bhola itself has a good infrastructure. The energy supply is guaranteed by a local gas field.
In November 1975 one of the last major smallpox epidemics of the 20th century broke out on the island .
In 1995 the island was half flooded, which left around 500,000 people homeless. The flood disaster is related to the rise in sea levels due to global warming .
