BibDesk is a BibTeX literature database for macOS . It is an open source program that was in use as a development version long before version number 1.0 was reached. BibDesk is part of the TeX distribution MacTeX .

description

BibDesk uses many of the functions provided by OS X, e.g. B. real-time search and AppleScript. For example, the American and German Amazon databases can be searched using an AppleScript and selected hits can be transferred directly to the BibTeX database.

BibDesk can also access numerous library catalogs using the widely used Z39.50 protocol.

The user interface is functionally based on the popular music management program iTunes . Just as iTunes manages music files, BibDesk organizes access to electronic documents such as PDFs.

With a reduction in functionality, BibDesk can also be used with normal word processing programs. BibDesk has a powerful template system with which the data can be exported as HTML , RTF or Word files. BibDesk also provides a graphical interface for creating these format templates - however, not all functions of the template system are available via this. The corresponding formatted references can be transferred to almost any word processor via the clipboard. With this procedure, there is no automatic compilation or updating of the bibliography as is possible with BibTeX. However, there is now also the option of direct exchange via AppleScript, for example with Pages or Microsoft Word.
