TeX Live is the most extensive available TeX - Distribution .

TeX Live is distributed on DVD-ROM (TeX Collection) or can be freely downloaded from the Internet. In addition, TeX Live has been included in most major Linux distributions for some time . The distribution based on the TeX Directory Structure is compiled by the TeX Users Group in cooperation with some local TeX user groups, such as the German-speaking user association TeX .

history

The project was originally founded by Sebastian Rahtz and is now managed by Karl Berry.

TeX Live has been developed since 1996 and was originally executable directly from CD-ROM / DVD-ROM - hence the name. Since 2010 the distribution can no longer be carried out directly from the DVD due to the amount of data. Since all installation files have been compressed, installation on a hard drive or on other mass storage devices is essential. TeX Live can also be installed on USB sticks for portable use.

Since the teTeX distribution, which was previously maintained by Thomas Esser in parallel to TeX Live, was no longer developed, TeX Live has instead been included in many Linux distributions.

Scope of distribution

TeX Live basically contains all packages that are also available on the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network . There are restrictions in individual cases for packages that are not under a free license .

From version 2008 the distribution has its own package manager with the program tlmgr ; u. a. it can also be used to add and update packages from the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network . Upgrading to a higher version of TeX Live is currently not possible using the package manager.

The TeXworks editor and the Asymptote language for describing vector graphics have been included since 2009 .

Since the 2010 edition, pdfTeX has been using the epstopdf package to automatically convert EPS graphics into PDF format. In addition, with the new BibTeXu, bibliographies can also be processed in Unicode , and DVI files can be converted into SVG format with the dvisvgm converter .

For TeX Live 2011 an experimental upgrade was offered for the first time for Unix platforms via a shell script and maintained with the following publications. The Biber reference management was added to the distribution. Since TeX Live 2012, the extension pdfTeX and the driver dvips can handle files larger than 2 GB; dvips also embeds the 35 PostScript base fonts in the output file by default. In TeX Live 2013 there were changes to the directory structure. In addition, MetaPost now natively supports the output of PNG files and floating point numbers; LuaTeX can process external PDF data.

There were only minor updates in the 2012 to 2014 editions. Since TeX Live 2013, the microtypographic subtleties from the microtype package can also be used with XeTeX and LuaTeX. In the 2014 version, support for the outdated Windows XP platform was no longer available . In the 2015 edition there were only detailed changes. PdfTeX supports JPEG- Exif and JFIF . The library newtokenlib for scanning tokens is integrated in LuaTeX . To save space, the 2015 DVD supports fewer platforms, but these can be installed online. TeX Live 2017 is delivered with LuaTeX  1.04. Already in LuaTeX 0.85 there were considerable changes in the primitives; the package luatex85 offers compatibility with pdfTeX . The package manager tlgmgr tests the packages to be installed for their integrity if GnuPG is available on the system . The index processor upmendex and the program gregorio for setting Gregorian chants with the package gregoriotex have been added to the distribution .

TeX Live 2018 is the first version in which the LaTeX kernel also expects UTF-8 as input encoding for pdfTeX . Compatibility with earlier LaTeX editions is made with the latexrelease package , with the adaptation of the inputenc package or with the command \UseRawInputEncodingin the source code of a document. Were included tlshell and tlcockpit two graphical frontends to the package manager, tlmgr . The library Kpathsea 6.3.0 carries out another case-insensitive search by default after an unsuccessful search on Unix systems including macOS .

MacTeX

For macOS there is MacTeX, which in addition to TeX Live also contains other auxiliary programs, in particular its own interface for the tlmgr package manager , the TeX Live utility , the TeXShop editor and the BibDesk reference management system . If there are several versions of MacTeX installed on the system, you can switch between them using a menu entry in the TeX Live Utility . Up to and including MacTeX 2015 this function could be found in the system settings of Mac OS X.

TeX Live can also be installed via MacPorts .

Before MacTeX there was the i-Installer by Gerben Wierda from 1998 to 2007, which was based on teTeX by Thomas Esser. The i-Installer was the standard TeX distribution on the Mac for the first few years after the introduction of Mac OS X and the end of support for Andrew Trevorrow's shareware OzTeX. Wierda did a lot of preparatory work that is still in use in TeX applications.
