MiKTeX is a TeX - Distribution for Windows . The additional MiKTeX tools have also been ported to GNU / Linux .
The required TeX packages ( e.g. for LaTeX or ConTeXt ) are loaded with an installation program from the Internet ( CTAN server) or from a local package repository (e.g. the MiKTeX CD) and then installed on the computer. The packages can be updated, and any packages that are not yet available can be downloaded and installed as required.
A 64-bit version has also been available for some time .
Memory requirements
For a complete installation of version 2.9, approximately 1.3 GB must be downloaded from the Internet and 2.4 GB installed on the hard drive. In addition to the normal installation routine, there is also a "Basic MiKTeX" installation program with which it is possible to install a TeX minimal system. The installation file already contains the necessary files that would otherwise be downloaded from the Internet. The installation file is about 150 MB in size.
Adapted editors
Most of the programs in the distribution are available as command line versions, so a text editor is required to write the LaTeX source code . There are several editors that have been adapted for use with MiKTeX and offer an IDE- like front end. These include the TeXnicCenter ( GPL ) designed for MiKTeX and often used in parallel , the platform-independent editor Texmaker (GPL), the public domain editor WinShell, the shareware program WinEdt , the free development environment LEd (LaTeX Editor), the editor Kile ( GPL) of the KDE project as well as the LaTeX frontend LyX . The TeXworks editor , which is based on the TeXShop developed for Mac, is integrated in newer distributions . However, there is also a special LaTeX environment for the editor emacs or XEmacs , it is called AUCTeX and, together with the RefTeX package, offers a comfortable working environment, especially for larger work ( diploma theses , books) that are distributed over several sub-documents; under Unix , XEmacs and X-symbol also offer a WYSIWYG -like view. There is also a plug-in called TeXlipse for the Eclipse development environment , so that LaTeX documents can also be created with this program.
