MacPorts , formerly DarwinPorts , is a package manager published under the BSD license , which is intended to facilitate the installation of other free and open source software on macOS or Darwin with the help of port scripts . An extensive collection of such ports is provided. The MacPorts are thus an alternative to Fink and Homebrew .
history
The Darwin ports were initiated in 2002 as part of the OpenDarwin project, which has since been discontinued ; Numerous Apple employees were involved, such as Landon Fuller, Kevin van Vechten and Jordan Hubbard .
In August 2006, after OpenDarwin was discontinued, the project changed its name to MacPorts.
service
A package is installed using the command line command port install paketname
. The source code of the required software is then downloaded, compiled and installed. Any necessary dependencies are automatically installed beforehand. By default, packages are installed parallel to any system programs in the / opt / local directory, which means that no system programs are overwritten.
statistics
On April 28, 2005, the project released version 1.0 of the software with around 2,500 ports. Version 1.2.1 from April 1, 2006 brought over 3,200 ports. Version 1.3.2 from August 9, 2006 included over 3,700 ports. Version 1.5 was released on July 15, 2007. Version 1.6.0 was released on December 27, 2007 with over 4,400 ports.
