Lift stops

Hitchhiker at a lift stop in The Hague (2005)

A lifts stop is an official place for hitchhiking in the Netherlands . The term is made up of the words "Lifters" = hitchhikers and "Halt" = stop. It is often referred to as "Liftersplaats".

The spaces specially designed for hitchhikers are marked with an official sign and offer a sufficiently large bay for cars to stop safely. The chances of being taken along at the lift stop are higher than at other places in the Netherlands, as the official bodies have already found widespread acceptance among the population. The Liftersplaats is intended to give hitchhikers the opportunity to move around safely and without traffic obstruction.
