The Biblioteca Palafoxiana is a library in the central Mexican city of Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza . It was built in 1646 on the initiative of the Spanish bishop and viceroy of New Spain Juan de Palafox y Mendoza . It is thus the first public library in colonial Mexico and is sometimes referred to as the oldest library on the American double continent. In 1673 a new building was completed. The 1999 earthquake damaged the library, leading to restoration work. In 2005 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .

The inventory comprises 41,000 media, including nine incunabula .
