Library of the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The library of the Conservatorio di Musica Benedetto Marcello in Venice is one of the most important libraries with a focus on music in Italy. It is located in the Palazzo Pisani di Santo Stefano in the eponymous institute , which was built in 1897 in a corner on the southern edge of Campo Santo Stefano . The palace itself was built from 1614, but underwent significant alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the Pisani family with Almorò III Giovanni Giuseppe died out in 1880, the palace was no longer used as a private building. The library, which was created over a hundred years, has an inventory of more than 56,000 entries, including complete works by numerous composers. There are also over 250 periodicals with a musical or musicological focus. Giovanni Giol became director of the institute in 2016.

Increasingly, the libretti and manuscripts are digitized and photographed in order to make them more freely available and at the same time to protect the originals. The Fondo Liceo-Società Musicale e Fondo Pascolato , the Fondo Giustiniani and the Fondo Torrefranca are already available in this way , while the Fondo Correr is still being worked on.
