BigDog (English for "Big Dog") is a dynamically stable four-legged walking robot that was developed by the robotics specialist Boston Dynamics on behalf of DARPA .

technology

The BigDog is 0.91 meters long, 0.76 meters high and weighs 110 kilograms, so it is comparable to the size of a small mule . It reaches a speed of up to 6.4 kilometers per hour, can carry a total weight of up to 180 kilograms and can remain in use for 24 hours. A variant presented in 2013 is equipped with an additional arm that z. B. can also pick up and throw heavier objects.

A single - cylinder two-stroke engine with an output of 11 kW at 9,000 revolutions serves as the drive (as of 2012) . The motor drives a hydraulic pump that acts on the four actuators on each leg.

A "light detection and ranging" ( Lidar ) radar and GPS are used for orientation and obstacle detection . The computer in the body of the Big Dog is a PC / 104 with an Intel Pentium 4 , which uses QNX as a unix-like real-time operating system. The BigDog program was written in the C ++ programming language.

The further development of BigDog is known as the Legged Squad Support System (LS3) or AlphaDog . It can be controlled using voice commands and gestures. AlphaDog is horse-like and significantly quieter than its predecessor BigDog, it is suitable for off-road use and is able to move through embankments and over scree. In flat terrain it reaches 11.3 km / h (7 mph).
