The Big Vermilion Lake is a lake in Kenora District in the western Canadian province of Ontario .
The lake was formerly called Vermilion Lake . It has a total area of 68.64 km². Its maximum depth is 42 m. It is fed by Little Vermilion Lake to the south , which is partially within Ojibway Provincial Park . On the northeast shore, a 6 km long drain leaves the lake to Pelican Lake . The lake is west of the town of Sioux Lookout .
The following types of fish are caught in the lake: eyeglasses , Canadian pikeperch , largemouth bass , black bass , pike , muscle lung , American perch , sunfish and herring vendace . The catch of the sea sturgeon is prohibited all year round.
