The reason for the construction of the Bihaberg tunnel in the Bihaberg between the Brentenmaisaqueduct and the Pfalzauaqueduct was the route planning for the construction of the western motorway between Vienna and Salzburg . In the section near Pressbaum, the high-spring water pipeline built on the hillside and the motorway would have been run parallel to each other on a slope section at risk of slipping, which would not have guaranteed the safety of the two structures.

The water law negotiation necessary for the construction of the tunnel took place on October 15, 1959, the approval decision was issued on December 11, 1959 by the Lower Austrian Provincial Government. The tunnel construction by the " ARGE Baugesellschaft H. Rella & Co, Vienna - construction company Ing. Karl Jäger ", commissioned on June 27, 1960, took place on August 5 of the same year.

A 1,653 meter long tunnel with a circle diameter of around 2.5 to 2.8 meters was excavated. The inside diameter of the finished duct, which has a slightly flattened base to make it easier to walk on, is around 2.1 meters. For the first time, shotcrete was used to secure the tunnel during the excavation work. Between June 28, 1961 and March 12, 1962, the inner lining was made of concrete. Work on the tunnel itself was completed on April 9, 1962. The connection objects to the existing conduit were then created.

In the course of moving away from the second Viennese spring water pipeline, work was carried out on April 26, 1962 to integrate the new tunnel into the existing pipeline channel. Since April 28, the high spring water has been directed to Vienna through the Bihaberg tunnel. Only then could construction work on the motorway in this section begin.

In addition, some renovation work was carried out, for example two entry towers were relocated and additional access options were created. At the end of June 1962, the external work was finally completed and the construction site cleared.

There was a serious accident at work on December 16, 1960. One worker was killed and two others were seriously and slightly injured.

According to an agreement dated November 3 and 11, 1959, the costs of 22,754,000 schillings were borne by the federal highway administration. This agreement also stipulates that all newly constructed facilities will become the unrestricted property of the City of Vienna, while the abandoned section of the route will become the unrestricted property of the Federal Road Administration from the day the Bihaberg tunnel goes into operation.
