Bikemap is a global bike map and online community for cyclists to create and share bike routes and bike route tips.

Routes can be created by users on online maps according to their own criteria, imported as GPS files or recorded with the mobile app. In September 2019 there were already over 4.5 million bike routes listed on Bikemap. The majority of the traffic comes from Europe and primarily the DACH region with more than 980,000 routes from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Almost 50% of the users are now from over 100 countries around the world. The USA, Taiwan and Brazil are among the countries with a particularly large number of users and routes.

Since it was founded, more than 410 million route kilometers have been planned and recorded with Bikemap. All of these routes can also be accessed by anyone on the website or in the apps without registration. With the app for iOS and Android you can plan, record and upload your own routes, and routes created by other users can also be called up. With the worldwide available Bikemap bike map you can navigate worldwide. The majority of Bikemaps services can be used free of charge, registration is only necessary for extended functions. Bikemap Premium also offers chargeable functions such as offline maps, offline navigation, bike-type-optimized routing, special bike maps and premium support. With the offline function, routes can be downloaded and then used without an internet connection, so that the app also serves as an intelligent navigation system. Bikemap received frequent mentions in the press: The Next Web was one of “5 kick-ass European startups”, numerous platforms in German-speaking countries reported on the complete relaunch of Bikemap in April 2016.

history

Bikemap was founded in April 2007 by Peter Eich. Between autumn 2007 and autumn 2008 sister sites for runners, hikers, skaters and motorcyclists were developed, but Bikemap remained the service with the greatest reach. Since January 2015, Bikemap has been operated by the Bikemap GmbH founded for this purpose, based in Vienna, with Christof Hinterplattner as managing director. In a financing round in December 2015, Bikemap received an investment of 700,000 euros, followed by a 7-digit investment in 2017. In spring 2016, the entire product range (web, mobile, social media) was fundamentally renewed technically and visually, followed by the introduction of chargeable additional functions (Bikemap Premium) in summer 2016.

In the summer of 2017, the app was revised again and launched in the Apple Store with a new design at the beginning of September, while the Android app followed a few weeks later. The update was based, among other things, on over 2000 completed questionnaires that were answered by users. In the huge update, the focus was on community, routes and navigation and the new functions include intelligent routing functions that lead lost users back to the route, route suggestions based on their whereabouts, voice navigation for all routes and a more user-friendly design . The app, which can only be used in English and German until the end of 2017, received an update at the beginning of 2018 that enabled the use of Bikemap in 5 other languages (Italian, French, Spanish, simplified and traditional Chinese).

In April 2018, Matthias Natmessnig (CEO), Tobias Seiler (CPO) and Benedikt Brandtner (CTO) took over the management. Since then, the Vienna-based startup has achieved exponential user growth to 2.5 million users thanks to constant product improvements. The valuable feedback from the community provides the basis for this. More than 2000 users took part in the user survey from summer 2019. As a result, the app design was further optimized and rethought with the map as the focal point. All 4.5 million routes can be sorted with filters according to route length, type of bike and surface conditions. A practical A / B / C route planner has been integrated for both Android and iOS. This allows you to plan and save your own routes with several intermediate stops and navigation options. The Android version made it possible to easily import routes as GPX / KML files. Both apps have now been translated into 11 languages in order to enable the use of the national language for a large part of the international user base.
