The portrait of Johann Joachim Winckelmann is a portrait that the painter Angelika Kauffmann made in 1764 of the archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann . Kauffmann's signature is on the lower right side. The portrait is now in the Kunsthaus Zürich , donated by the painter Conrad Zeller (1807–1856) in 1850.

The picture shows the scholar at his desk, with the pen in his right hand. Both hands are supported on an open book that lies on an ancient relief depicting the three Graces .

history

The 22-year-old painter Angelika Kauffmann became famous with this portrait of the ancient researcher Winckelmann. In the same year Winckelmann published his history of the art of antiquity .

Kauffmann painted the picture on behalf of a Swiss friend of Winckelmann. Winckelmann was very satisfied with this portrait, which was engraved and distributed in large numbers.
