The Bilston Viaduct is a former railway bridge in the Scottish village of Loanhead in the Council Area Midlothian . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

It is possible that there was a wooden previous bridge at the same location. Today's Bilston Viaduct was completed in 1873 after a year of construction. He led the Edinburgh, Loanhead and Roslin Railway across the wooded gorge of the Bilston Burn Stream . In 1892 the bridge was fundamentally redesigned. With the closure of the railway line, it became obsolete and remained unused. In 1999 the viaduct was restored and opened to pedestrians. The total cost was £ 1.5 million.

description

The steel truss bridge lies on the southern edge of the village of Loanhead. Formerly, the Edinburgh, Loanhead and Roslin Railway was single-tracked over the viaduct. After the railway operations had ceased, a reinforced concrete lane was set up in the meantime. The bridge has a width of 4.6 m with an arrow height of 42.7 m.
