Loanhead ( Gaelic : Ceann an Lòin ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Midlothian . It is about eight kilometers southeast of central Edinburgh and five kilometers west of Dalkeith . The North Esk runs a few hundred meters to the west .

history

In the late 17th century, Loanhead received market rights. The village developed as a location for coal and slate mining. The mines were in the hands of the lords of nearby Mavisbank House , who added a miners' settlement to Loanhead in 1736. One of the largest coal mines was Burghlee Colliery , which was sunk to a height of 366 m around 1860 , and which employed up to 795 miners at peak times. The last mine closed in 1989. Loanhead was also a center of the paper industry.

1884 Loanhead received the rights of a Burgh . Numerous villas were built there during this period. At the time, various Edinburgh citizens owned houses in Loanhead and there was a regular carriage service to the capital.

Between 1861 and 1881 the population of loanheads nearly doubled from 1,310 to 2,493. Growth continued throughout the 20th century. While 4882 people lived in Loanhead in 1951, the 2011 census counted 6294 inhabitants.

traffic

The A768 ( Bilston - Dalkeith ) is the town's main road. The A701 (Edinburgh– Dumfries ), which runs a few hundred meters to the west, and the northern A720 , Edinburgh's outer ring road, connect Loanhead to the trunk road network. In August 1874, Loanhead Station began operating along the single track Edinburgh, Loanhead & Roslin Railway . The line last operated by the London & North Eastern Railway was closed in July 1968. The Edinburgh Airport is located 14 km northwest.
