The Bindenschwanzguan ( Penelope argyrotis ) is a chicken bird from the family of cracidae (Cracidae).

The Latin additional species comes from ancient Greek ἄργυρος argyros 'silver' and ancient Greek οὖς, ὠτός ous, ōtos 'ear'.

The bird is found in Colombia and Venezuela . The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical mountain forest , preferably moist habitats , but also coffee plantations mostly between 550 and 2400 m altitude.

features

The bird is 50 to 65 cm long, the male weighs between 686 and 981, the female between 625 and 900 g. As in the Bearded Guan ( Penelope barbara ), the tail feathers are not uniformly colored; the conspicuous white markings on the elytra , the clearer dewlap and more white on the face, especially on the ear covers , help to distinguish them . Young birds do not differ from adults in plumage.

voice

The call of the male, as with other hokko chickens, is usually only given as loud cackling screams during the territorial delimitation from February to April.

Way of life

The species usually occurs in pairs or small groups.

In Venezuela the brood begins from February to April, in Colombia a little later.

nutrition

The food consists of fruits and seeds , which are mostly looked for on the trees.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • P. a. colombiana ( Todd , 1912), Santa Marta Guan - Santa Marta Mountains, Northern Colombia, white tips on the more prominent feathers, less white in the stripe above the eyes
  • P. a. argyrotis ( Bonaparte , 1856), nominate form , - Eastern Andes in northern Colombia and western Venezuela as well as along the coast in Venezuela
  • P. a. albicauda Phelps & Gilliard , 1940 - Sierra de Perijá in northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, has white tail tips

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
