Bingenheimer Ried

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The nature reserve Bingenheimer Ried (identification 1440019) is located west of Bingenheim (Wetterau) in the Horloff -Aue. It belongs to the nature reserve Auenverbund Wetterau in the European nature reserve network Natura 2000 and is part of the FFH area grassland areas in the Wetterau . The Bingenheimer Ried, designated as a nature reserve in 1985 (StAnz 1985 (3): 204) is the heart of the Wetterau floodplain network and an important nature reserve in Hesse.

The approximately 85-hectare Ried ( fen ) is primarily an ideal breeding ground for rare birds such as the Baillon's Crake , the small Crake , teals , shoveler and white storks and resting area for migrating birds such as the ruff , redshank and Greenshank . The wet meadows are home to other rare animal species such as the common spadefoot toad , the great crested newt and around 40 species of dragonflies. The nature reserve is maintained by grazing with cattle and Exmoor ponies.

In 1991 an adjustable weir was built so that floodplains can form in autumn, winter and spring, which are drained after the breeding season. An observation tower, which was built in 1996, enables the animal world to be observed without disturbance. The Pfaffensee (NSG), which emerged from the remaining open pit holes and has been full since 2013, drains its excess water into the Bingenheimer Ried. At the confluence with the reed, the reeds died in 2015 and areas for breeding grounds were destroyed. In the 2015 heat wave in Europe, all but one of the ponds and ponds dried up.
