Binibona is a village on the Balearic island of Mallorca that belongs to the Selva municipal administration . It is located around 2.3 km northeast of Caimari at the foot of the Sierra de Tramuntana .
history
The place name is documented in a document from 1300 as Bilamala in Topónimo 1232, then in 1250 as Benimalen and 1290 as Benimala. In 1506 the place is first documented as Beniabona. According to the records of the philologist Joan Corominas, the origin of the name is from the time of the Moorish rule and goes back to the term Bilamala = bad rock, rocky land. According to the book Llibre del Repartiment, it seems to be a typical case of renaming the term, because mala means bad and for superstitious reasons the local addition was changed to bona = good in 1506.
The oldest surviving and restored buildings date from the 15th and 16th centuries, with mansions added later. A special manor was converted into an agrotourism hotel. There is also an old chapel from the 16th century with a cloister topped by a large sandstone arch.
The current population is included in the INE statistics of Caimari with 69 inhabitants. (Source: INE)
