history

The place name Caimari is probably of Mozarabic origin. The spelling of the place name changed over time, so the names Caymarix li Aben-leube , Caymarix Labelembe or Caymaritx Labenleube , Queymaritx and Caymari can be found in historical documents .

The area of Caimari is historically known for olive growing. Archaeologists believe that the oldest settlement near Caimari comes from the pre-Talayotic culture (2500–1400 BC). This is confirmed by prehistoric finds in some caves and grottoes located in the mountains of Caimarienques .

In the period following the Roman conquest of Mallorca in 123 BC, the settlements became known as Fornassos . A variant of the name from this period is derived from the Latin anthroponym Caimari of the famous Roman general Gaius Marius , who was involved in the conquest.

The Caimari lands were recaptured by the Catalans between 1230 and 1231, and Caymarix li Aben-leube, known as Moorish, was divided among the population.

economy

In the village is one of the oldest olive mills in Mallorca, which is still in operation today under the brand name Oli Caimari . The oil mill at the entrance to the village is managed by a family business that also grows olives. From November to February, during the olive harvest, the process of olive processing can be viewed. Oli Caimari has an attached shop where a variety of oil products are sold.

One of the traditional economic activities practiced in the highlands of Caimari was the profession of ice cream maker (Els nevaters). They worked in numerous snow houses on the nearby mountains, where they collected snow in winter and kept it in the Mallorcan Cases de Neu to deliver and sell the ice in the towns on the island in summer.

Church history

Until the 18th century, the inhabitants of Caimari used a private chapel in the Son Albertí manor house for religious purposes, as there was no village church. In 1727 the priest and the owner of Son Albertí received from Pope Benedict XIII. permission to build a public village church. For this purpose, the owner of Son Albertí made the areas adjacent to his property available. The foundation stone was laid in 1732 and construction was completed in 1757. The Església Vella church consists of a single nave with pointed arches . A sundial from 1851 is located on the main facade above the main portal.

Parish Church Immaculada Concepció, it is also known as the "Iglesia Nueva" (New Church) was built in 1853 due to a strong increase in population. The church consists of a nave with a barrel vault , cross ribs and side chapels. The main altar is crowned by an altarpiece dedicated to the Immaculada Concepció de Maria (Maria Immaculate Conception), the patron saint of Caimari. The church was consecrated in 1890. The organ from the “Sagrados Corazones” church in Palma de Mallorca and the image of the Immaculate Conception and the Blessed Ramón Llull are particularly interesting. The side chapel on the right as you enter the church through the main portal is dedicated to the Virgin of Lluc.

The construction of the new church led to the closure of the old Església Vella church as a place of prayer. It is now used for art exhibitions and other cultural and social activities.
