The Guinea Pig Friends Germany (MFD) Bundesverband Deutschland e. V. (MFD BD) is a German association of guinea pig breeders and keepers of guinea pigs based in Bergheim .

The purpose of the association is to "bring together all guinea pig breeders and owners in the association's territory, as well as the exchange of experience among members, the promotion of exhibitions, breeding according to breed standards and the provision of information about keeping, nutrition, care and genetics of guinea pigs."

history

The founding goes back to the initiative of a few guinea pig owners who founded the interest group "Guinea Pig Friends Frankfurt" in July 1987 for the purpose of exchanging experiences. A year later, on June 11, 1988, the founding meeting of the “Guinea Pig Friends Germany e. V. “The MFD has been a federal association since 1994 and was named“ Guinea Pig Friends Germany (MFD) Bundesverband Deutschland e. V. " registered in the register of associations . A breakdown of the association into state, district and district associations as well as local associations is sought. The North Rhine-Westphalia regional association made the start in 1997. To date, the umbrella organization comprises 8 regional and 5 district associations.

The largest guinea pig association in Germany unites breeders, enthusiasts and emergency stations under one roof. He has been an official member of the European Association for Poultry, Pigeon, Bird, Rabbit and Cavia Breeding since 1998 and has been the only German representative for the small rodents / cavies division since 1997.

Show system and breed standard

At the first Federal German exhibition in 1988 in Frankfurt am Main, in the absence of a standard and a trained judge, the winners were chosen by the visitors. Purebred guinea pigs in Germany were judged for the first time in 1993 at the 6th Federal German Exhibition by Dutch judges according to a breed standard. A federal German association standard for pedigree guinea pigs has existed since 1996.

Every year in early summer the German guinea pig exhibition takes place in the Cologne area . Around 1000 guinea pigs of various races and colors are shown on it. Smaller performance shows of the state and district associations take place throughout the year.

Engagement in the European Association for Small Animal Breeders

In order to be able to pursue the goals and tasks of the association on an international level, the association joined the European association for poultry, pigeon, bird, rabbit and cavia breeding in 1998 and has had voting rights since 1999.

The association took part in the compilation of a list of races, the basis for a uniform European standard that has been developed by the standards commission since 2000. The official representative for Germany was Gaby Prust, who until March 2008 also headed the standard committee of the MFD BD. The uniform European standard for cavies was issued in 2008 and has been the basis for breeding European pedigree guinea pigs ever since. In 2012, Christian Koch, a delegate of the MFD, was elected for the first time as the new chairman of the Standard Commission of the Cavies Division (ESKC).

In 2014, the Federal Association hosted the European Cavies Show.

Exchange of experience and information

The association's own magazine "Guinea Pig News", which appeared for the first time in 1992, serves to exchange experiences between the members of the association. In the same year, a standard of care for guinea pig lovers was presented. Since then, the MFD has published further information brochures.

The inclusion in the breeder list takes place only after a so-called breeder examination of the Federal Animal Protection Commission of the association. In a first step, it should ensure that the respective owner has dealt intensively with the keeping, nutrition, care and genetics of guinea pigs. In addition, a star system for quality breeding was developed, which should enable buyers and beginners to recognize experienced guinea pig breeders.

The Association of Guinea Pig Friends in Austria (MFIÖ) was advised by the Federal Association of Germany when it was founded in August 1995.

The division paid a joint membership fee for all affiliated national cavy associations and received a joint vote in the general assembly. The MFD has been a full member since 1998. In 1999 an application was successfully made to only look after guinea pigs (Cavias) in the small rodent division, after which it was renamed.
