The Biological Society of Washington is a worldwide association of scientists that was founded on December 3, 1880. Its original purpose was to "promote the study of biological sciences and hold forums where scientific articles can be presented and discussed". Today it serves to promote systematic studies and the dissemination of taxonomic knowledge.

In May 1882 the first edition of the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington was published, which has been published quarterly since.

Another journal is the Bulletin of the Biological Society of Washington , which has published major studies, symposium reports, and special study collections at irregular intervals since 1918. In 1898 the Biological Society of Washington was one of the eight founding organizations of the Washington Academy of Sciences . The governing body consists of elected officials and selected members. George Brown Goode was elected first president and Richard Rathbun was elected first secretary . Later presidents included Frederick Vernon Coville , Edward William Nelson , Edward Alphonso Goldman , Clinton Hart Merriam , William Healey Dall and Paul Bartsch .

The Biological Society of Washington has approximately 250 members, including a number of staff from the Smithsonian Institution , the United States National Museum, and the Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior .
