The Ilmenau biomass cogeneration plant (abbreviated: BHI ) is a biomass cogeneration plant in Ilmenau , Thuringia , which went into operation in 2005 and mainly serves to supply the city with district heating and to supply the nearby Ilmenau technical glassworks with process steam. In addition, it generates electrical energy that is fed into the public grid. The main fuel used is wood . The power plant can produce up to 10 MWemit thermal energy and 5.1 MW electrical energy. This covers a quarter of the consumption of electrical energy and around half of the district heating requirements of the city of Ilmenau. That is the highest proportion of renewable energy in the energy supply in a Thuringian municipality.
The power plant is operated by Biomasse-Heizkraftwerk Ilmenau GmbH , a joint company of Evonik New Energies GmbH, which owns 74.9% of the shares, and Ilmenauer Wärmeversorgung GmbH, in which Evonik New Energies GmbH, in addition to the city of Ilmenau, is also 49 % is involved.
