About 30% of the products were sold in Germany and about 70% were exported .

history

The history of glass production in Ilmenau goes back to the 19th century. The TGI had essentially three subsidiaries namely Founded in 1852, Sophie hut , which dealt with the production of glass, and the Thuringian Glass Instrument Factory Old, Eberhardt & Hunter (founded in 1872, processing of the raw glass for thermometers and other glass instruments), the 1969 Kombinat VEB work for Technisches Glas Ilmenau - parent company of VEB Kombinat Technisches Glas were merged. After the political change, VEB Technisches Glas Ilmenau was converted into a GmbH with the company name Ilmenauer Glaswerke GmbH , a trust subsidiary, under the umbrella of the holding Glasring Thüringen AG created from VEB Kombinat Technisches Glas Ilmenau . Many of the approximately 13,000 employees of the former combine for technical glass lost their jobs.

The company Technische Glaswerke Ilmenau GmbH , hereinafter referred to as TGI, was founded in 1994 by Karl-Albrecht Geiß. This took over the core areas of the former Ilmenauer Glaswerke GmbH, which was liquidated. TGI thus represents a successor in the historical sense. However, it was not a legal successor to Ilmenauer Glaswerke GmbH.

At the end of 2006 the investment company MEP Management + Equity Partners AG from Hamburg joined as the majority shareholder with a 76% stake. On October 30, 2008, the two-year investment phase, during which four new melting tanks and modern machine and automation systems were built, was completed. In 2013, a legal dispute was pending between around 180 employees and the company regarding the granting of profit sharing for 2010 in a volume of around € 480,000 before the Erfurt Regional Labor Court, after these employees were successful in the first instance at the Suhl Labor Court and the management appealed against these decisions had inserted. This litigation was based on the balance sheet published for the 2010 calendar year, which showed a profit, the interpretation of which was in dispute between the parties. On May 9, 2014, the Erfurt District Court opened preliminary insolvency proceedings over the assets of TGI (see Thüringer Allgemeine May 12, 2014). In this context, the managing director Dr. Kainer - at the same time spokesman for the board of directors of MEP AG and its main shareholder, initiated an investigation into suspected bankruptcy and breach of trust. The proceedings have since been discontinued. The final insolvency proceedings were opened by the Erfurt District Court due to overindebtedness on June 1, 2014 under transaction number 172 IN 190/14. The dissolution of the company was entered in the commercial register of the Jena local court on June 30, 2014 under HRB 303358.

The successor company Ilmaborglass GmbH shut down operations at the end of 2015.
