Biotic ( ancient Greek βίος bíos , German ' life ' ) describes processes and states, occasionally also objects in which living beings are involved.

Examples:

The application of the term to substances that are constituents of living beings or are formed by them is less common . The term biogenic is more common for this.

The contrast is abiotic .
