Bipinnaria

Bipinnaria

The bipinnaria is a larval form of the echinodermata , which occurs in the individual development ( ontogenesis ) of the starfish (asteroid). It is a bilaterally symmetrical shape, usually after a metamorphosis into the brachiolaria is converted. The bipinnaria lives free in the plankton while the brachiolaria attach themselves to an adhesive disc. In a few species of the Paxillosidae , such as representatives of the genera Luidia and Astropecten , no brachiolaria is formed and a direct conversion to the finished starfish from the bipinnaria takes place.

This larva is named after the two apical wings (from Latin bi "two" and pinna "fin, wing").
