biography

Biplab Kumar Deb comes from a rural middle class family. His parents Hirudhan Deb and Mina Rani Deb were Bengali Hindus who fled from what was then East Pakistan to India during the Bangladesh War in 1971 and settled there permanently. Shortly after the escape, Biplab Kumar was born and grew up in what is now the Gomati district. His father was involved as the local party leader of the Jan Sangh , the predecessor party of today's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 1999, the son graduated from Udaipur College and then left Tripura for Delhi to serve the Hindu nationalist cadre organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In 2015 he returned to Tripura and became president of the local BJP organization in Tripura on January 6, 2016.

In the election campaign leading up to the parliamentary elections in Tripura on February 18, 2018, two blocs faced each other. On the one hand the previously ruling left-wing front under the leadership of the Communist Party (Marxists) CPI (M) with the incumbent Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and on the other hand the BJP, which is involved with the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an interest party of the non-Bengali Tribal people of Tripura had allied. In contrast, other parties, especially the Congress Party , hardly played a role. The election ended with a convincing victory for the BJP-IPFT alliance, which won an absolute majority of the seats. This ended the 25-year uninterrupted chain of communist-led governments in Tripura. In the election, the BJP had increased its mandate share from 0% to almost 60%. After that there was still a few days of uncertainty as to who would become the future Chief Minister, as the BJP had not decided on a clear candidate in the run-up to the election. Ultimately, the BJP leadership chose Biplab Kumar Deb. On March 9, 2018, Biplab Kumar Deb was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tripura. He was the first Chief Minister of Tripura from the ranks of the BJP.

Commentators of the BJP ironically remarked that an election campaign chant by the communists Biplab aashbei ..., ("The revolution will come ...", Bengali বিপ্লব biplab = 'revolution') had actually come true - Biplab had come and the state of saffron (the Party color of the BJP) has been colored.

In April 2018, Biplab Kumar caused a stir with the statement that the Internet and satellite technology were invented "hundreds of thousands of years ago" in India. The proof of this can be found in the epic Mahabharata , which describes how the charioteer Sanjaya gave the blind King Dhritarashtra a precise account of the battle of Kurukshetra from a distance .
