Bird Island is an undeveloped barrier island on the southwestern edge of the North Carolina coast. It is located between Sunset Beach and Little River Inlet . The nature reserve covers 1,681 hectares, consisting of around 135 hectares of highlands and over 1,300 hectares of swamp area. The dunes and marshland of Birds Island are considered to be important habitats for endangered species such as sea turtles.
Until 2002, the island was privately owned and was acquired and placed under conservation by the State of North Carolina with the help of donations and public funds. This biotope is managed by the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management .
