Birgit Glasmacher (born February 28, 1958 in Wolfenbüttel ) is a German scientist and holder of the chair for multi-phase processes at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover .

Life

In 1976 she began her mechanical engineering studies at RWTH Aachen University, specializing in process engineering, which she completed in 1982 with a degree in engineering. At the University of Dundee in Great Britain, she studied biomedical engineering from 1983, graduating with a Master of Science the following year. She then worked for 17 years at the Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Technology at RWTH Aachen University. During this period she became the mother of a son (1987) and a daughter (1989) and she received her PhD with the title On the calcification of polyurethane biomaterials in the cardiovascular system from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (1991).

From 2001 to 2005 Glasmacher was head of the Cryobiology & Biomaterials Department at the Helmholtz Institute for BMT at RWTH. in 2005 he was appointed to the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH). Since 2006 she has been university professor for multi-phase processes and director of the institute of the same name at the LUH. In 2018 she received an honorary professorship at the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics in Ukraine.

Glasmacher advocates the advancement of women in technical courses in many areas, especially in mechanical engineering. In this context, she also carries out projects for and with school girls.

research

Glasmacher's particular interest lies in the field of biomedical engineering . Her main research interests are biomaterials , functional tissue engineering , biohybrid systems, damage mechanisms on implants and cryogenics .

Teaching

In addition to supervising various process engineering and biomedical engineering lectures, Glasmacher is significantly involved in the design of the Biomedical Engineering course at the LUH.
