history

After the money for laying the foundation stone was collected, the donations dried up. The city of Birmingham threatened to sell the land elsewhere if the mosque was not completed within two years. Thereupon the Mosque Foundation (Birmingham Mosque Trust) turned to both Muslims and non-Muslims. Soon enough money could be raised for the construction, and the mosque was completed in 1969. The mosque was officially opened in 1975 as "the largest mosque in Western Europe".
