The Episcopal Seminary in Graz is the first of the boys' seminars founded in Austria in the 19th century . It is now a boarding school in the Graz-Seckau diocese for boys from secondary level I. Since September 2016, girls have also been admitted. The pupils attend the Episcopal Gymnasium or general or vocational secondary schools in Graz. The boarding school is located in the Augustinum in Lange Gasse in the 3rd district of Geidorf .

history

Since the diocese of Leoben could not train priests at the time, there was no grammar school in the diocese. Therefore, court chaplain Sebastian Job created the "Carolinum" foundation in 1830. They made it possible for “poor young people from Upper Styria” to attend the Academic Gymnasium in Graz. They were housed privately. In 1842, the Diocese of Seckau followed with a similar foundation, the “Augustineum”. A place to stay was created for the two merged foundations at the corner of Lange Gasse and Grabenstrasse in Graz, in the so-called "Warnhauser'schen Haus". The demand was so great that from 1956 a home teaching institution was run, which in today's Episcopal Gymnasium is one of the most traditional educational institutions in Styria .

During the Second World War , the boarding school was closed by the Germans, but the seminarians were accompanied underground by the prefect general Karl Lind and the spiritual director Franz Vollmann. From the school year 1945/1946, the seminar and grammar school began again, the following year the re-reference could begin in the Prince Bishop's seminary. In 1971 the seminar and grammar school were separated, which until then had been run together.

In 2000, the first seminarians were admitted to Graz to attend a vocational high school or the upper level form of a general high school. In 2008–2009 the approximately 23,000 m 2 building was converted into the Augustinum , which, as the Episcopal Center for Education and Vocations, houses all educational and vocation facilities in the Graz-Seckau diocese . In 2018, the name was changed to Episcopal Campus for Education and Vocations and a uniform umbrella brand was introduced for all educational institutions.

Seminar today

With " b + ", the episcopal seminary of the Graz-Seckau diocese set a new accent in 2012: it is a boarding school with "added value", as it not only offers space for around 100 people in the boarding school, but also a special place in the Augustinum with many institutions in the middle of the educational district of Graz , Geidorf ; in addition, living, living and learning are accompanied by educators, called prefects . This guarantees a holistic education that consciously includes the dimension of the Christian faith. The boys' seminar was closed in September 2016 and the facility continued as an episcopal boarding school. Since then it has been taking girls and boys.
