Biskopskällaren (German: Bischofskeller ) is a vaulted cellar on the island of Ivö in the Swedish province of Skåne län .

The vault is located in the south-eastern part of the island in the hamlet of Hovgården .

history

It is believed that the two naves of cross vaults existing basement the last remnant of the 1220s at the request of the Bishop of Lund Andreas Sunesen built Episcopal Palace Ivöhus is. Possibly the complex goes back to an older defense building from the 12th century. Sunesen spent the last years of his life here from 1223 to 1228. Other parts of the original building still existed until the 17th century, but only the cellar remained.

The cellar was later built over with a farm building, which was struck by lightning in 1927, which largely destroyed it. However, the cellar vaults remained undamaged. In the mid-1930s, the home association Schonen acquired the property. The inside of the cellar was excavated in 1938 as part of an archaeological investigation. Outside, the earth has been removed so far that the windows of the vaulted cellar are again above the earth. During the excavations, another foundation wall was found, which indicates the existence of several buildings.

The basement can be reached by stairs from the surface. Apart from an above-ground covering of the cellar vault, there are no superstructures on the system.

For a long time it was suspected that Sunesen was sick with leprosy and therefore withdrew to the island. Legends reported that he lived in the basement and had no direct contact with people. However, investigations on the bishop's skeleton disproved this assumption. The bishop only suffered from arthritis .
