Bismanol

Bismanol is an alloy of bismuth (Bi), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe), which is used as a material for strong permanent magnets . The alloy was made in 1953 by Edmond Adams et al. at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory , a former United States Navy research facility .

The alloy had the highest known magnetic energy density at the time, but was largely replaced in the following decades by the technically better rare earth magnets such as the strongly magnetic neodymium-iron-boron and, for more temperature-resistant applications, the samarium-cobalt .
