The Bismarckian column of the Association of German Students on the Rothenburg (Kyffhäuser) was built to a design by Wilhelm Kreis (1873–1955). The Leipzig architect Curt Einert (1863–1928) was entrusted with the construction management. The construction of the Bismarck Column began in June 1906. It was inaugurated on August 5, 1906 - before completion - on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Kyffhäuser Association of German Student Associations. The construction was then finished in October 1906. After the completion of the column, the flags and coats of arms of the individual associations of German students were placed inside. The Bismarckian column received the following inscription: “Dedicated to the memory of Bismarck on August 5, 1906, the Kyffhäuser Association of German Student Associations 1881 - 1906” . After the Kyffhäuser Association was dissolved in 1938, the pillar became the property of the Hitler Youth and then passed into the hands of the Kyffhäuser Association .

Today it is under the sponsorship of the Kyffhäuserkreis (district town Sondershausen ). The facility is managed by the Kyffhäuser Tourist Association, whose headquarters are in Bad Frankenhausen .

The Bismarck Column has not been open to the public since 2012 because it is located in the Rothenburg area, which is owned by a private owner.
