history

The tower was designed as part of the Gleisbergpark (now Jutta-Park) laid out in 1900 by Jutta Ida Gleisberg, wife of the wealthy Grimma mill owner Gleisberg. The landscape park was created in adaptation to natural conditions based on English landscape parks and Italian gardens. The building was inaugurated in 1905. The construction costs at that time were 7,000 marks. At the end of the Second World War , the tower was badly damaged in the upper area in 1945. The building remained in ruins until the early 1990s. It was renovated in 1992/1993 and reopened on May 1, 1993 as part of the newly designed Jutta Park. Today the tower is part of the cultural project for memorial smithy Höfgen . A sound installation by Erwin Stache was housed in the tower from 1996 to 2012 .

Description of the tower

The 16 m high structure is both an observation tower and a water tower . The crenellated viewing platform can be reached via a spiral staircase with 81 steps. The water storage tank was installed in the basement of the building. The tower could be lit by means of a removable firing device. Opposite the entrance to the tower there is a flat and rectangular terrace built on at the rear with arched openings and a railing. This terrace points to an avenue of chestnut trees leading from a roundabout in the park to the tower. Granite stones were used as building material for the round tower.
