Chandrika Prasad Srivastava

Chandrika Prasad Srivastava KCMG (born July 8, 1920 in Lucknow , India ; † July 22, 2013 in Genoa , Italy ) was an Indian lawyer. From 1974 to 1989 he was Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization .

Education and professional career

Srivastava studied at the University of Lucknow , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1940 and 1941 . This was followed by postgraduate studies, at the end of which he was awarded the degree Magister Artium . In 1944, Srivastava finally left the university after earning a Bachelor of Laws . He entered the public service and initially worked in the Ministry of Commerce . In 1948 he was promoted to State Secretary . In 1950 he accepted a position in the city administration of Lucknow . Just one year later, he moved to the administration of the Meerut district . From 1953 Srivastava worked in the General Directorate for Shipping Issues, interrupted by a stay at the Ministry of Transport as a personal assistant to the Minister of Transport. In 1961 he became the first managing director of the newly established state shipping company Shipping Corporation of India . In 1964, Srivastava became Assistant State Secretary to Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri . After his death, he returned to his position as managing director of the Shipping Corporation of India. While there, Srivastava was also the managing director of Central Inland Water Transport Corporation and a member of the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India . In 1974 he succeeded the British Colin Goad as Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization . In this office he was confirmed a total of three times and held it until his replacement by Canadian William O'Neil in 1989. This makes him the longest serving Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization. After his retirement, Srivastava initially served on the Board of Directors of the International Maritime Law Institute . In 1991 he became the first chancellor of the World Maritime University . In the same year he was the Indian Register of Shipping .

Srivastava was married to Nirmala Salve from 1947 , with whom he had two daughters.
